Sometimes it’s difficult to find a good balance between privacy and security on one hand, and allowing everyone an enjoyabje user experience on the other hand. This article will show you how to set your parcel settings to be in compliance with our covenant, but also granting you a high security and privacy level.
Griefer Protection
Fortunately, griefer attacks don’t happen very often. But when they happen, it is important to have your land prepared for that event to prevent continuing annoyances for everyone or even sim-crashes due to caused lag.
With a few clicks, you can make your parcel at Lionheart more resistent against griefer attacks. Most griefer attacks are successful, because people forget to do some settings on their land, which allows the griefer’s objects to remain on their land and continue annoying residents by spamming them with particles, other objects, sounds etc. By setting your land to the correct settings, you even can prevent a griefer attack. Griefers usually look for unprotected land, where their annoyances can stay for a long time, to disturb other user’s experience over a longer period. Most of them don’t even start their attacks if they see, that their annoying objects will not be able to remain in a region.
Setting Permissions
Go to your land and open the About Land menu by clicking the menu path: Menu › World › About Land…
Now click the Options tab. You will find there the following settings; please bear in mind that this article only talks about the All Residents option:
Create Objects
By unchecking this option you disallow other residents than yourself (or members of the group your land is set to) to rez objects on your land. You can leave that option turned on if you want, for example to allow guests to rezz a chair or unpack their boxed items from the last shopping tour. If you want to add extra security, you can uncheck that option.
Object Entry and Run Scripts
Object Entry allows other residents to bring their objects into your parcel from outside of its boundary. Our covenant says that this option needs to be turned on permanently. This is because if this option would be turned off, a lot of systems like teleporters, flying vehicles and similar things would stop working on your parcel boundary. Teleporters are mostly objects where an avatar sits on, and which moves from the origin to its destination. If Object Entry would be turned off, a teleporter beam which needs to cross your land, would stop operating on your parcel boundary and the avatar would not be able to reach its destination.
Run Scripts needs to be permanently enabled for the same reason. Teleporters are scripted objects, which would stop operating when entering your land, as you dont allow the script inside the teleporter to be executed. In fact, in the most occasions there is no real reason to disallow scripts on a land. It would cause attachments to stop working like for example Animation Overriders, leaving your guests stuck in the last executed animation.
Autoreturn
Now lets talk about the ultimate powertool against griefing objects! Open the Objects tab. The Autoreturn function will, once turned on by setting a value higher than ‘0′, return after the given time every object which is not owned by the landowner or set to the right group.
Autoreturn must be turned on at Lionheart, set to a low minute value. We recommend a value between 1 and 5 minutes. This allows your guests to temporary rezz items, but prevents that griefers will be able to permanently rezz annoying objects on your land, as they will be returned automatically to them after the set minutes. We highly recommend to turn on autoreturn right after purchasing your land.
If you have autoreturn still turned off, but already rezzed some objects, or you have objects of other residents on your land, you need to check first if some items are in danger to be returned. To check if objects are in risk of beeing autoreturned, check the Owned by others value of your Objects tab. If the value is higher than ‘0′, these objects will be returned by Autoreturn. Please read the article “Land and Groups” to learn about how to set objects to a group so that they can stay on your land.
Privacy
Privacy is an important feature for most people. At Lionheart, we ask you to protect your privacy with a security system, to prevent unwanted visitors to disturb you on your land. We do not allow Banlines, means, restricting access to specific groups of avatars. These settings cause the Second Life Server to show up a blinking red wall of Textlines for other avatars around your parcels edge which is not only an eyesore, but also makes it impossible for example for teleporters to work properly, or on beach / island parcels, to grant passage for boats etc.
For this reasons, we need to insist on leaving the Allow public access option on the Access tab on its standard setting.
Instead of restricting access by using the land settings, we allow you to restrict access by using security systems, which are available on the market. You can contact us to get some recommendations about systems. The security system needs to give a warning from at least 10 seconds before it takes action against the intruder. This allows people to pass by peacefully without beeing harmed immediately.
Important! Please note, that the security system only takes actions against an intruder which comply with the Terms of Service (TOS) of Second Life. We recommend you to use an eject function. Actions like for example orbiting are forbidden by Second Life’s TOS and could cause that a person who accidentially entered your parcel and got orbited can file an abuse report against you.
Banning single avatars
While we not allow to ban whole groups of avatars, we DO allow banning single avatars from your land, for example when they permanently annoy you or you have other reasons to do so.
By using the Banned Residents list, you can add avatars by name which will not be able to access your land anymore after doing so. If an avatar still continues to aggresively annoy you from outside of your land, you may additionally file an Abuse Report with Lionheart Support. Chatlogs and a snapshot can help you to evidence a grief. We’ll check your case and will eventually drop an estate ban over those people.
